STEPANOS ARCHBISHOP YENOKIAN

ARSEN HARUTYUNYAN

Archbishop Stepanos Yenokian (also known as Tpghisetsi, Tiflisetsi, Zmiwrnatsi) was a prominent figure in the Armenian Church in the early 19th century. He is buried in the monastic cemetery of Holy Etchmiadzin. A study of the epitaph, which consists of seven lines, reveals some details about his life and activities. His mother is also buried in that cemetery.

According to manuscripts from the Matenadaran and other sources (especially archival documents from the Catholicosate), Yenokian occupied numerous positions: legate in Smyrna, inspector at the gymnasium of Holy Etchmiadzin, head of the Shirak diocese, member of the Supreme Council of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, etc. In the records of manuscripts, Yenokian is mainly mentioned as a commissioner. His several sermons and other works are preserved in the manuscripts of the Matenadaran.

Archbishop Stepanos Yenokian also organized the immigration of Armenians from Iran. Certain archival documents provide evidence for that process, especially the letters of Archbishop Nerses Ashtaraketsi to the Brotherhood of Holy Etchmiadzin.
